A guide to seasonal wedding flowers: May-September

Cascading bridal bouquet of mixed summer blooms including tangerine dahlias, local garden roses, deep scarlet scabiosas, queen annes lace, and eucalyptus popules.

Hey there, flower lover. If you’re planning a wedding in Ireland between May and September and dreaming of a bouquet that’s not just breathtaking but also kind to the earth, you’ve come to the right meadow.

As a florist who believes in locally grown blooms and sustainable beauty, I want to walk you through what’s truly in season here on the island! No imported roses or pesticide laced stems. Just honest-to-goodness Irish grown flowers that reflect the rhythm of nature, the artistry of the seasons, and the spirit of slow living.

Why Seasonality and Locality Matters

Before we dive in, here’s why choosing local and in season flowers is a total game-changer for your wedding:
- They last longer (they’re fresher!)
- They smell like actual flowers (not the inside of a shipping box)
- They support Irish growers & biodiversity. Let’s protect our bees!!!
- And frankly? They just look more natural, more romantic, and more alive.

May:

May marks the return of abundance, and the first flush of Irish-grown blooms really start to show off.

·       In Season:

·       Tulips

·       Ranunculus

·       Icelandic poppies

·       Sweet peas

·       Lilac

·       Hellebores

Design Tip: May bouquets are all about soft, romantic textures. Think layered pastels with a few wild tendrils. Pure magic.

June:

Long days, sweet scents, and the garden at her flirtiest.

·       In Season:

·       Peonies

·       Sweet peas

·       Foxgloves

·       Delphinium

·       Garden roses (locally grown!)

·       Cornflowers

·       Nigella

Design Tip: June florals are the epitome of “just-picked-from-the-meadow” chic. Peonies can star in the show, but pair them with lighter touches for a gathered cottage look.

July:

High summer glory! Lush, bold, and bursting with life.

·       In Season:

·       Dahlias

·       Snapdragons

·       Cosmos

·       Zinnias

·       Scabiosa

·       Ammi (Queen Anne’s Lace)

·       Sunflowers

Design Tip: July’s bouquets are fuller, bolder, and a bit cheeky. If you love colour and contrast, this is your floral month. But hot tip, if you are into colour I will make any month as colourful as possible for you!!

August:

Peak dahlia season, and the garden is in full celebration mode.

·       In Season:

·       Dahlias

·       Rudbeckia

·       Amaranthus

·       Grasses & seed heads

·       Celosia

·       Strawflower & statice

Design Tip: Go big or go home. This is the time to lean into texture, tonal palettes, and floral drama (the good kind).

September:

The garden’s last hurrah; moody, rich, and poetic.

·       In Season:

·       Dahlias

·       Cosmos

·       Seed pods

·       Hydrangea

·       Japanese anemones

·       Chrysanthemums

Design Tip: September weddings pair beautifully with richer hues like plums, rusts, dusky pinks. Add dried elements for texture and depth. It’s the perfect blend of summer’s fullness and autumn’s mood.

Hopefully this helps, please reach out if this speaks to you or if you have any questions!
